Renewable Energy Services, Inc. (RES) specializes in the design, sales and maintenance of residential and commercial Photovoltaic (PV) Power Systems on Hawai‘i Island.
Since incorporating in 1990, RES has provided several hundred Hawai‘i Island homes with off grid, hybrid, PV power systems and more recently grid connected, “Net Metered” residential and commercial/utility PV power systems. RES holds a State of Hawai‘i, C-60 Solar Power Systems contractor license # C-27865.
RES president Peter Shackelford, pictured at the NELHA PV site, has worked “hands on” in renewable solar technologies for over 25 years. In the early 1980’s Peter was the electrical crew foreman building the first wind farm in the State of Hawai‘i at Kahua Ranch in Kohala. Further work at Kahua Ranch included managing daily operations of the 3.4 MW wind farm and working as a technician and then manager for the University of Hawai‘i, Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), Wind Energy Storage Test (WEST) facility where wind, pumped hydro and hydrogen energy storage experiments were performed.
In 1992, as a senior engineering technician with the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR), Peter operated the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant experiment at the Natural Energy Lab at Keahole Point. While still with PICHTR in 1996, Peter designed two village scale renewable energy power systems utilizing wind, photovoltaic, battery and diesel genset technologies. The first, installed at Kahua Ranch, became the prototype for a second system installed in a remote village in Fiji. The 100 kW Nabouwalu, Fiji village power system was one of the largest stand alone renewable energy systems ever built.
Since 1997, Peter and RES, Inc. have concentrated on photovoltaic power systems exclusively. In addition to numerous large off grid homes, some noteworthy commercial systems built by RES have been the HELCO 20 kW system at the Natural Energy Lab at Keahole point, the 18 kW Holuakoa Café in Holualoa, 10 kW Honoka‘a High School and the 30 kW off grid, Ahu Pohaku Ho‘omaluhia Health Retreat in Hawi.

Filling out the RES team, are Lisa K. Shackelford, Office Manager and Roland Shackelford, Technician.
Lisa has lived on a remote part of Hawai‘i Island for over 25 years and understands the benefits of remote PV systems. Lisa brings energy and efficiency to the RES office, managing operations and scheduling field activities for Peter and Roland.
Roland, born and raised on Hawai‘i Island, apprenticed with his dad from a young age. In 2006, Roland completed the SEI PV design and installation workshop. Roland is an invaluable part of the RES team as an experienced hands-on technician in the field. He is an experienced surfer and is on the water every chance he gets.
The Shackelford Homestead, in Hamakua, Hawai‘i for over 30 years, consists of an off-grid PV-powered house and the large 4000 sq ft RES workshop.
