Hawaii's trusted solar professionals

Renewable Energy Services has been transforming and storing the energy of the sun for hundreds of residential and commercial customers on the Island of Hawaii since 1992.  Our Photovoltaic power systems have brought the gift of electricity to remote sites without utility service and generated tremendous savings and power security for customers connected to the utility grid.    We are passionate about the benefits of solar power and committed to it's safe, reliable and artful use on Hawaii Island today and for generations to come.

President - Peter Shackelford

Peter Shackelford has a vast amount of “hands on” experience in various renewable energy technologies, and he has been in this business for over three decades. In the early 1980’s Peter installed the electrical infrastructure for the first wind farm in the state at Kahua Ranch in Kohala. Further work at Kahua Ranch included managing daily operations of the 3.4 MW wind farm and working as a technician and then manager for the University of Hawaii, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute's Wind Energy Storage Test (WEST) facility.

In 1992, as a senior engineering technician with the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research (PICHTR), Peter operated the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) power plant at Natural Energy Lab at Keahole Point. With PICHTR in 1996, he designed two village scale power renewable energy power systems utilizing wind, PV, battery and diesel genset technologies. The 100 KW system installed at Nabouwalu village in Fiji was one of the largest stand-alone renewable energy systems ever built.

In 1997, recognizing the growing demand for reliable renewable energy, Peter began focusing on Renewable Energy Services, Inc full-time.

He started designing, installing, and maintaining off-grid battery systems for both homes and businesses.

With the advent of net metered PV systems, RES applied Peter’s extensive off-grid experience into the new grid connected technologies to design and build long lasting, high value systems for our net metered customers.

Our company

RES started operations in 1992, bringing the gift of electricity to remote sites around the island without access to utility power. Our specialized expertise on battery-integrated PV systems is what sets us apart from typical electrical and PV contractors. Over the years as demand for PV systems increased, our team and product offering have grown, but our attention to detail and customer-oriented approach have remained the same. Today we proudly serve nearly 1,000 Big Island customers and counting.

Roland Shackelford

Roland joined the RES team full-time in 2004, and quickly became technically knowledgeable. He has acquired numerous certifications from equipment suppliers and industry educators such as Solar Energy International, SMA America, Outback Power Systems, Enphase Energy and Direct Power & Water Corporation. In 2009 he was the first Kama’aina to acquire the prestigious North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Installers Certification.

In addition to these certifications, Roland takes pride in staying current in terms of equipment training and new product releases so that he can better serve customers.
